The "Pakka Bill" Movement
My Take on Indian Tax Reform
WHAT IS A PAKKA BILL?
To my friends who aren't familiar with Hindi, the word Pakka means "Actual" (at least contextually).
So, Pakka bill means an Actual bill.
This bill is the same bill that you get when you buy something (clothes, food, hotel room, salon service, you name it).
Then what does Pakka mean?
Aren't all bills pakka?
Well, not really. At least in India.

Why should we know about it?
It matters more to Indians (#Disclaimer).
Anyway, my idea to write about "pakka bill" is to spread awareness.
I want people to ask for bill whenever they purchase anything. Even if the purchase is of ₹1/-, it matters if you ask.

Why are you writing about it?
My answer is simple.
I want India to prosper. Period.
Now, with a more detailed explanation:
95% source of Government revenue is Tax Collection.
When people buy stuff, they usually don't ask for bill (at least for small purchases). This gives an option to the shopkeeper to not record that sale.
So, what does that mean?
The shopkeeper pays tax for only the sale he records!
So, if he doesn't record, he doesn't need to pay. Hence, government faces revenue loss!
It matters because out of 1.3 billion of India's population, only 3% of the people pay tax!

What is GST?
GST refers to Goods and Services Tax.
This is a new tax system which is coming for the first time in India (Hopefully from July 2017).
So, from a layman's point of view, if you were charged for VAT, Service Tax, Excise, CST, etc. on your bill - all that would now be things of the past.
Now, GST would be charged - "everywhere" (well, almost).

Why Know GST?
Believe it or not, I had the same doubt before I started it.
Let me put it this way: it is common sense!
Don't you think you should know whether you are being charged fairly?
One way or the other, you are a part of this system. Hence, you should know how this works. (Mmm, if not completely, then at least basically).

How are Pakka Bill and GST related?
For you to demand a "pakka bill", you should at least know some bit of what constitutes that bill!
Knowledge of GST will help you in that part.
Again, I am doing this because it is matters.
Or, as the government puts it, "Jaago graahak jaago!".
