The Stories Within

A Medium publication documenting experiments in spatial journalism using WebVR, spatial audio, and wearable AR.

That's the whole thing.

What happens to journalism when the story stops being flat? That question drove The Stories Within, a Medium publication I built at Parsons in twenty nineteen, opening with a series on the future of news.

I ran experiments: a spatial podcast, WebVR environments where the narrative wraps around you, three-sixty degree stories, including a spatial audio piece on YouTube, and a wearable augmented reality piece built for Bose AR audio glasses.

Each article on this page documents one phase: design decisions, prototypes, technical notes. Together they form an archive of how the concept took shape. I hope you read on.

Narrated in my own cloned voice, generated with ElevenLabs v4.

The overview, or the fuller process story.

Journalism was built around text and image. I wanted to know what happens when you build it around space.

“The Stories Within” started at Parsons in 2019 as a research project on the future of news. I channeled it through a Medium publication – seven articles, each documenting one phase of making. The first piece introduces the series and sets the question: how does immersive media reshape what a story can be.

From there, the work moves through design and implementation in sequence. I planned a spatial audio story, then explored how immersive audio stories are constructed from the ground up. I built a spatial podcast, then a WebVR piece combining spatial audio with YouTube 360. I created a 360 image background for VR environments and built a spatial piece for Bose AR.

Each article captures the thinking at that stage – process write-ups, prototypes, technical notes. Nothing polished into retrospect. The archive holds the work as it happened, which is the point: a live record of how a concept moves from question to built thing.

The publication links to all seven pieces. It stays open, so you can trace the path I took.
